Actually I remember the issue well. A college friend of mine was agressively being recruited by a GCI elder at work. She could convince him she was already saved and had a good church. She was praying in the Washington Metro station. Little did she know she was sitting on the answer. The newsbox for the Sentinal. She brought the paper into the breakroom at work. The elder told her she should not read that. She got up, hands on hips, and screamed, "Says Who?!!" That was the end of involvement in GCI.
The Jean Liverman story helped bring one GCI chapter to a screeching halt. GCI was getting ready to do a heavy blitz. The campus was plastered with posters with kids playing volleyball and the caption "Have fun with Great Commission" After a stop to use the library copier, my girlfriend and I taped over the posters with the article "Jean's Story: How She joined GCI and how she was Deprogrammed" They wented the student union ballroom, only to have 15 people show up, most of the staffers. What really made the whole affair interesting was that I was expecting a barrage of phone calls and attacks on the street. Two months later, I walked into a bakery for coffee and doughnuts. A GCI member was working the counter. I asked how the "City College" group was going. "We folded. It just was not the Lord's will. The same thing happened at Cambridge Eastern. Boy, news travels fast around here."
"Those things happen". I paid for my purchases and left. It is amazing what a roll of masking tape and quarters can do.
