When did it start costing $10 to go to church?

See this: "Wear the Pants!"
Saturday, January 21, 8:45 AM-12:45 PM, Evergreen-Bloomington, Auditorium. Hey Dads! We invite you to “Wear the Pants!” We are called as Dads to be the leaders in our home and the leaders of our family. That is why we are hosting a seminar to help better equip us Dads with the necessary tools for leading our homes in a Godly way. So get up, put on the pants, and join us. After all, if you don’t wear the pants, what will you wear? Special Guest Speaker: Mark Bowen. $10 at the door – includes lunch.

It is not uncommon for smaller churches to have to charge to conduct special training / teaching events, especially those that involve outside speakers. Ordinarily that would not much concern me because in a traditional church you can feel free to skip the event if it has no interest to you, or the topic is not applicable to your situation, you have to work, or you do not have the money to attend.

However, when GC says, "attend this event" it is not to be seen as an invitation to evaluate the applicability of the event to your life as much as it means "you better go to this thing and support it or you will paint yourself as uncooperative and rebellious in our eyes."  oooooo...that gives me the old goose bumps all over again.

My guess on this one was that the $10 was simply to cover lunch. Food, paper products, beverages can be kind of pricey these days.

I understand the concern. But I prefer the fee to the other common Christian method of financing such events, the "love offering".

Honestly, this seems silly a silly point - nearly all Christian conferences/special events/etc of any sort have some sort of cost associated with them.

People who went probably took it more seriously too than if it had been free Smiley

What I am getting at is whatever happened to an after Sunday meal that everyone brought something to share, like what we in MinneSOTA call a pot-luck lunch.

It's all formal and crap now there at ECC in Bloomington.
