I was reading in 2 Peter this morning and came across these verses in Chapter 1.
Quote
3 His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence, 4 by which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises, so that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. 5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge, 6 and knowledge with self-control, and self-control with steadfastness, and steadfastness with godliness, 7 and godliness with brotherly affection, and brotherly affection with love. 8 For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.
What stuck out to me was that in the list knowledge comes before most of the character qualities listed.

I have always been baffled by the GC emphasis on character and "de-emphasis" on knowledge. I think it has led to a lot of their "issues". Obviously, both are of critical importance.

Echoing that Machen quote, life built on knowledge, not a life suboordinating knowledge; and knowledge wrought in love, which includes truth, which thusly means right knowledge, principally of God, in who's light man knows his depravity and need, and against Whom in Person and His Word all is to be judged.

addendum: the above is kind of compact/cryptic isn't it?

When man is enlightened to the existence of Him against Whom in Person and His Word all is to be judged, and in who's light man knows his depravity and need, which thusly means right knowledge , and that knowledge is wrought in love which includes truth, not a life suboordinating knowledge ...is a life built on knowledge.

Kinda clumsy but it reverses the sentence structure to be assist with understanding.

My paraphrase.

When Man becomes aware of God and His will and also that he( man) is a sinner... which is a correct assessment of his true situation....
And in light of that knowledge lives a life from correct motives,( gratitude to his Savior) not just a right life conducted under wrong motives ( his own need to be right), then that is a life built on "true knowledge" ( God's wisdom, not man's)

Therefore, since we receive a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us show gratitude, by which we may offer to God an acceptable service with reverence and awe; for our God is a consuming fire.
