When I read Cult Proofing Your Kids by Paul Martin I felt horrified to realize that the four things he says not to do are the very four things I felt gcc taught me to do with my kids. I thought to myself, it’s like they are teaching parents to trap their own kids in their cult!
If you are interested in parenting differently than what you’ve been taught here is a new perspective to consider:

This paragraph:

"But one area remained deep-rooted and surprisingly resistant to change. It was the idea that God is fundamentally a rule-maker and that his love is conditioned primarily on my ability to do what is right. I felt like a child always cowering beneath the upraised hand of an angry parent. This conception of God expresses itself through a worldview of legalism."

The message at Evergreen is that those who continue in sin are not saved.

I don't know about you all but most of the sins I commit are ones I am in a habit of committing. It is brain conditioning that can keep one in a loop of doing the same thing one does not want to do. Like swearing. I have an exaggerated startle response and those four letters words will pop out of my mouth when I am startled. I have had people question that I am a Christian if I cannot just stop because I am saved. I used to hate those testimonies when people shared that they were saved "thanks to Evergreen" and just like that stopped swearing. Lucky them! HA HA. Anyway I never felt secure in my eternal state because of the heavy messages that if you continue in a sin you are not saved.

One of many, I am sorry for the pain and confusing legalism caused you. You certainly aren’t alone. You are in the company of many beautiful people who are well loved by God. I hope you find this humerus. In the gc church that I attended the pastor actually swore several time during his Sunday morning messages. And not small swear words, he said words like the B word and he called a well know person by name and then called him an A H!  In church, with children present!  People were up set. When he was confronted he said he chose the language on purpose to make his point. This is the same guy that was asked by gc leaders to speak at faithwalkers several times. So......I hope you’re laughing at how ridiculous man made, ever changing, demanding rules are. I hope you are no longer condemning yourself for your language and can use your energy instead to love someone today.
