Margaret, thanks for that article on the link from CEI! It does seem quite balanced in its journalism. Very helpful article. (Can’t remember if I saw it before or not.)

If I were a police detective examining the facts presented I would conclude the statements by the GCI [GCx alias] Leaders are inaccurate. The deception that the GCx Churches were autonomous or that their ties to the national organization were not close was actually pedaled by nearly all of their churches. They would often justify such dishonesty with the excuse that the gospel would not prosper without their group’s connections being “covered up.” When the real truth is the GOSPEL HAS SUFFERED BECAUSE OF IT’s FALSE TEACHING AND ABUSE.

As many of us know, GCx has historically implied that they were the only people on the face of the earth evangelizing biblically. Well, actually they were further from the Bible than most mainline christian denominations. Quite poor is how I describe their evangelization. The burdening baloney that comes with their message can paralyze believers faith for years to come!! So many believers in GCx lose their joy because the leaders substitute themselves in the place of Jesus Christ’s lordship. They make false condemning judgements as to their people’s value and spiritual devotion. One’s joy and confidence of CHRIST IN US is the most motivating power behind his desire to share God’s awesome news of grace. GCx “doctrine” has very often stolen that foundational truth from them. That puts quite a damper on any evangelizing.

Also, GCx members’ surrounding details of their answers in the Wheaton Paper (link Margaret gave above) are humorously revealing, which they may not even realize.

This business of "Lording it over" and equating their [GCx Leaders] role as being one and the same with Moses, it's all about instilling fear, leaving us quaking in our boots, and it is such messed up theology I am surprised they don't get in trouble for it.  It is so over the top cultish.  It is about asserting and reasserting their authority, and their right to even lead people into a ditch, because after all, even if they are wrong, they speak for God.  ...

But here is the nasty thing.  This authoritarian structure, devoid of common decency and love and compassion, is so ingrained in their heads that even if they stopped using Moses and the sons of Korah, they would find more subtle means of keeping everyone thinking that they had just better obey or else.  Moses is just a handy go to story that suits their purposes. ...

I recently left the Great Commission church that I had been involved in for nearly 2 and a half years.  In that time period, I attended several retreats, leadership conferences, faithwalkers and so forth.  Before joining a GCM church, I had been part of a wonderful Christian fellowship with other believers with a sincere passion to follow and learn about Jesus Christ.

At the time, I was involved in an on campus ministry, but did not have a church home.  I was pressured quite a bit by some friends I knew from the GCM church to "get plugged in", and in my weakness to please I conceded (which is a terrible idea).  I quickly became involved (as if going along with the crowd) and had my doubts all along the way.  I had a thirst for the gospel, for Jesus Christ and for sincere fellowship but I didn't feel like that resonated within the ranks of this church.  The extremely difficult thing about the underlying thoughts and beliefs of those in leadership is that on the surface, they claimed to believe what I believed but in a slightly distorted way.  It was an extremely damaging time in my life, one that I believe God allowed for his glory, but painful nonetheless.

I can now see that this fellowship was something incredibly evil and that real fellowship does exist---where the Word of God is preached the way that God meant it. … God loves---He does not manipulate and He does not use his spoken Word to control his people.  It makes me pretty mad when someone uses God's Word to control others---that was not His intent.  I am eternally grateful that I am no longer where I was and hope to continue to discover the truth of Jesus Christ.
