Is it legal for a church to sponsor an individual for an R-1 visa to get them to come on as a staff member when that individual was unable to gain employment in their field after graduation? It seems like a ploy to let that person stay in the country after they have tried other options. I have heard a case of this happening and I wondered if there were any legal repercussions.

I think I know who you're talking about here and I have to say that the warning bells were definitely ringing loud when I found this out. I guess what they're doing is perfectly legal but it still doesn't seem right, particularly because this was done after all the other options were exhausted. If this had been done at the beginning, I guess it would have seemed more real and not like a last minute effort to find a way for them to stay.
