I'm a young seminary student at a small Baptist school. I really feel that my calling is to minister to college students, and have been turned off by a lot of the big-name organizations like Intervarsity and Campus Crusade. I met another young man at a conference recently wearing a "Reliant" shirt, who said that he was a pastor with Collegiate Church Network (which, I found out from a simple internet search which brought me here, is a GCx organization). At first, what he was describing seemed exactly like what I have envisioned for my future ministry. Now that I've looked around this site a bit, I'm very wary of what this guy is telling me. A little extra digging on Reliant's website shows that they used to be GCM:

https://reliant.org/about/our-full-story

I'm of an... investigative bent. I like to root around in places I probably should leave alone and uncover things that are maybe better left covered. I have to admit, all of this has really stimulated my itch to try to "infiltrate" this guy's campus group and try to catch them out on whatever issues I find. I know that it would be deceitful of me to try to do this, but I feel like it could also be an incredible opportunity to out CCN, and Reliant, to the rest of the Evangelical world.

Advice?

Hi, and welcome to the forum.

My opinion is that joining under false pretenses would be wrong.

It's one thing to join in good faith, discover that there are problems, and then share what you discovered. It's quite another to join not in good faith and go looking for problems.

If I were in your position, I'd look for an organization that I could serve without reservations. If the desire of your heart is serving God and college students, don't let false teachers and questionable organizations distract you.

Just my opinion.

Thanks for sharing your wisdom. I'm just super intrigued by the whole thing, and I think that I could probably help a lot of people that might be trapped in their world. I was so excited to meet that guy, too. I thought wow, God really just dropped a great opportunity in my lap! Now, I think maybe God was giving me information on who not to get involved with.

Well, it's not my place to tell you what to do or not do, but have you considered that you might be more helpful as a refuge on the outside than as an insider? Way back when I was growing disillusioned with my GC campus group (before they even used the name Great Commission) it would have been helpful to have a Christian to turn to who knew something about the group, but wasn't part of it.

That's a very good point. Would I be viewed by those in leadership with CCN as being a threat to them? Also, is there a thread with updated basic FAQ kind of information so that I can be better brought up to speed on the whole GCx story so far? I looked through a few things, but there's a LOT of information on this forum (as could be expected for a site that's been operating for over 10 years!)

Hmm. Not sure if we have a super-thread like that, but off the top of my head, this thread might get you started: http://forum.gcmwarning.com/general-discussion/wish-list/.

For a strictly historical perspective, you could read Marching to Zion, http://gcxweb.org/Books/MarchingToZion. Not sure if you're interested in going that far back, though.

Some of the other members here will probably have other suggestions.

InfiltrationStation, I don't know if you're still reading here, but if you are you might find this thread, http://forum.gcmwarning.com/general-discussion/the-rio-church-statement/, interesting. Reply #3 by Linda today sums up some of the serious problems with leadership in the GC movement.
