I am saddened by this weekend's tragedies that have taken place in the Denver Colorado area.  My condolences to the families and friends of the deceased.

There is no excuse for this kind of violence.

Upon trying to learn about the Youth With A Mission movement, I was deeply troubled to see this group on many of the same cult watch-lists as gcac/blitz/the rock.

One troubling blog entry is found here:
http://www.rickross.com/reference/youth/youth1.html

I feel I speak for many on this site who can see a parallel to the experiences we had with gcm/slick50/evergreen.  Substituting GC* for YWAM in the text is too easy.

It has yet to be determined the shooters' motives.  No matter how diabolical they will prove to be, my initial response is that this will not turn out to be a random shooting.  Groups that hurt people unfortunately often become the target of that hurt after the victims find the strength to leave.

With this in mind, I strongly encourage anybody thinking of joining GCM to perform due dilligence.  Look at the similiarities.  Look for the differences.  Stay away from groups with questionable pasts.

When you first posted this, Angry, I thought you were being a tad off base with what you wrote.

I was surprised to find out recently, however, that a friend had some very cult-like experiences with YWAM in an overseas location/office that reinforced your exhortation to use wisdom regarding this organization.

Here's another link with more info for anyone interested:

FYI, GCM lists "Youth With A Mission" on their Partners page, under the International section.
