Rebecca Davis is a Christian writer who has worked with many, many abuse victims. She has a free downloadable guide in both text and audio formats called How to Enjoy the Bible Again (when you're ready) after Spiritual Abuse (without feeling guilty or getting triggered out of your mind). The link to download it is here, https://sendfox.com/heresthejoy.

The guide is short, upbeat, compassionate, and practical. However, you'll have to provide an email address in order to get the direct link.

Rebecca also has a blog called, "Here's the Joy." She writes quite a bit about the misuse of Scripture as a means of control and coercion, a topic on which she has also published several books. Her blog is at https://heresthejoy.com/.

Cool resource, Huldah! I ordered the ebooklet by sending my email, and I agree with you that it is a compassionate and practical guide. I like what she says about starting with the Psalms. It’s very helpful that she explains how much we can learn from how David talks to God, so we can talk to God openly expressing our anger, despair, hurt or praise. As you say it is a quick read.

I have heard some of her podcasts, and was impressed by her research in the scriptures on topics related to spiritual abuse that she discusses.

Another idea that might help (I can't remember whether the author mentioned this in her guide): if your abusive church favored a particular translation, it might be less triggering to switch to a different translation.
