Back in Ames, there was a group of young women living together on Welch Avenue, who did something very cool with their basement. They offered it as a space for people to "share all things common," as in Acts 2:44. If there was anything you weren't using, you put it there; and if you wanted anything that was there, it was yours for the asking. There were clothes, furniture, kitchen utensils, construction equipment... just about anything, all kept clean and tidy and well organized.
It was all very low-key, casual, and unofficial, which is probably why it worked so well.
