Again I say, Wow! Reading all these comments is amazing. Did I mention that I said, Wow!? How could this organization cause so much pain? I thought I was alone.

Are people still getting hurt? Or are most of you like me? Injured a long time ago. I spoke to one of my GCI tormentors about 8 years ago. It didn’t sound as though he had changed much. He’s an Elder. He sounded perplexed that I had not come to see him, and mentioned that other ex GCI members had visited him recently, and that that meant they must be “doing well” in Christ. “Otherwise they wouldn’t have stopped by.” I don’t know what that meant exactly…It seemed to imply that since I hadn’t stopped by I wasn’t doing well in Christ. The conversation ended pleasantly, but I really had to hold my tongue. One thing I learned early on when I was with GCI that has proven to be true is that you must choose carefully those you hang around with. I would not want to take any chance that that old “strange spirit” ( if you can understand what I mean) might rub off on me. I got the feeling he had no idea of any wrong doing. It was either that or he had chaulked it up to youthful mistakes, and had moved on. I hope it’s the latter.

Unfortunately, most of the people posting here were members of the movement until recently. So yes, I would say people are still being hurt.

Although I didn’t officially declare, “I’m done with GC” until about 10 years ago, I mentally departed when I read the ‘91 statement. However, the cult like treatment that began my disenchantment began in about ‘84. I’m 45 years old now.

I still kept track of people in the church over the years, it’s amazing how some are still there. But, mainly, I hear of disillusionment and frustration. Most have left. What ever happened to Rob L.?

Oh by the way, I used to do a perfect Jim McCotter imitation. Used to get big laughs. If we ever have de-commissioned conference, we can have a lot of fun with that. I’m old enough now where I could actually be made to look like him….let’s see…dark hair and bald….hhmmmmm

THIS IS TO EVERYONE WHO WAS HURT AT GC:

It’s gonna get alot better now that you have left for whatever reason. The hard part is that it is going to be new relationships. It seemed like it took forever to establish new friends. Part of that was that I was sooooooo cautious. It’s going to take a little time to decompress. I just found this web site, and i wish I had found it long ago. Don’t blame any of this on God. Just move on and know that He is going to do cool things in your life. It will happen. Learn from your unfortunate experience with GC. If you think it is bad now, you should have been in it in the ’80s where you were instructed to follow the word of untrained and often very young and untested men. Yikes! They were the stand in for the Holy Spirit.

There was a lot of this sort of thing going on in my neck of the GC woods as of 2005. People trying to play the Holy Spirit in other people’s lives, and just this whole idea that following God really meant following another human being. The verses about the Holy Spirit had been replaced by the proverbs on “counsel.”
