Apparently, two weeks ago (when I missed church due to feeling under the weather), Jim McCotter was there to visit some old friends.   Angry Can't BELIEVE I missed the opportunity to meet the guy myself......argh...... Angry

Hi, Asking -- if I had seen him in *my* church, my blood would have started to boil.  I saw way too much of him for a few years.  Not a living-in-his-house sort of thing, mostly just Sundays and around the GCI office.  Believe me, that was enough, even then.

A few years ago, when I was at New Life, a buddy of mine mentioned that he heard a rumor -- that Jim was asking about coming back into GC, and even back into leadership.  He said he had an idea of what my reaction might be, and I certainly removed any remaining doubt.

Y'know, maybe I'm a "conspiracy theorist"  Wink , but the timing DOES have me wondering.  This week in Omaha is the annual GCC pastor conference, and they're celebrating GCC's 40th anniversary.  I understand it's supposed to be a huge bash; lots of travel down memory lane.  That's why that CD of old GCC music was being recorded a month or so back -- it's supposed to be used at the conference and available afterwards for others.  I keep find myself wondering over the last few days whether McCotter's going to show up there, and if so, what the reaction to that appearance might be.  Is there a way for us "common folk" to find out what happens in one of those conferences??  I'm SOOOOO nosey.....!!

I love a good conspiracy theory. Smiley Remember a few years ago when McCotter showed up at Faithwalkers? Then, 4 years ago, he showed up at a church in Arizona--a Rock church in Tempe. I've had a feeling he was going to reappear. In fact, my conspiracy theory is that he was going to make a come back a few years ago. Then, we all found each other through Google and this site went up with all the old newspaper articles and they had to put that idea on the back burner and go into damage control (like with that Nelson sermon telling everyone that this site was slander and they shouldn't come here).

I did note that they seem to be doing a trip down memory lane which seems odd. Generally, people who regret things they did don't like to revisit them.

Here is the link to the discussion we had when I found the link to McCotter in AZ. Wouldn't it be interesting to have a recording of that talk!

It does have me wondering, because I'd never heard his name anywhere -- in my many years of GCC association -- until landing on this forum.  Now, his name was mentioned once in the first edition of "FaithWalkers" (the old "Day Lights" or whatever it was called) this year; his name has been mentioned in passing from the pulpit three times this year in our church; and he shows up two weeks ago, just before the pastor's conference....... seems like an almost too-impossible string of chance happenings.  (I forgot to mention that Herschel Martindale is still at our church, so maybe the old buddies are getting back together??)  We'll see.....

Wow, that's the first GC conference in years that I want to attend.  I could wear a fuzzy mustache, glasses and a fake nose. I hope we at least get to hear recordings.

This is interesting.....I recently found an old sermon from jim on my family members ipod.  I told him its like listening to a sermon of the leader of those who drank poisen, he didn't like that too much but ita true.  Why listen to ne thing no matter how good the message from a former leader of the group when it was singled out as a cult.

Just to clarify I would listen out of curiousity and a hope that hings have either changed or confirmation that things are wacky.  But never as a "message" to glean from.  No way!

Isn't that interesting. I had never heard of Jim McCotter either until we were getting ready to leave. Something seemed "off" to us, so one night I Googled and that was the first I ever heard of his name. I believe it was 2005. We had been at our church for 10 years--never heard him mentioned. Obviously, they were doing "damage control" after the '80's and the '91 Statement of Error. I remember MD referring to his former pastor in Ames and how he had been vilified by the Des Moines Register. Even that story seemed fishy to me at the time, but I had no reason to doubt at that point.

In the summer of 2005 things intensified for us. We learned a lot more about Jim McCotter and Great Commission. I remembered the Des Moines Register comment, went to our local library and ordered the microfiesh of that article. It was sickening.

Here's the link to that article for anyone who is looking for info on McCotter and his role in GC.

http://gcxweb.org/Articles/DSR-11-26-1978-b.aspx

If my child attended a church that had a founding pastor who said,
Quote from: Jim McCotter
"When you discipline, this verse indicates, as others do, that you want to do it so it wounds. Now, when you say 'wounds,' it doesn't mean that you have a bloody mess on your hands necessarily. It doesn't mean that you have a child 'wounding' like he has a broken leg."

McCotter added in his taped sermon that this means you have been severe enough that the child's attitude at that point has been reversed.

"And he may, and often will be, black and blue," McCotter continued. "My children have been many times. And it cleans evil from them."
I would get on my knees and beg them to leave and come home.

Yes it was weird agatha he said Jim had a great insight into the love of God, it was a message from back in the day.  I'm terribly worried about why he downloaded and listened to it like who told him it was a good message!  Luckly it was the only one on there but he also had sermons on there from other leaders.  Hardly ne music on his ipod at all, only sermons.

well doesnt that just feel like an icepick in the gut...ol jimmy comming back to play church

jimmy had no more insight into the love of God, apostleship, or humility as he did into receiving the will of God by the Holy Ghost, but oh could he mesmerize the crowd when he spewed his ignorance

Is there any clarification as to whether "ol Jim" did connect at that conference?  Did his re-appearance have anything to do with his getting GC support to start a new movement?
