On my journey to rediscover the history of a movement I have been apart of since birth,
one thing that my parents mentioned in regards to the time when the church was receiving accusations of becoming a cult sticks out to me:

They mentioned ex-members holding a protest outside one of the church's (I can't remember which one).

In my research so far, I have yet to read of such a protest...Are there any links or stories from ex-members that could bring more context to this story?

This would've been around the time where Jim McCotter was still in the movement or at least shortly after he left and sometime before the Weakness Statement of 91'.

Thank you.

There were people present handing out anti-GCx flyers outside a “DC” National Conference where McCotter was speaking.  I read that from at least two people on here.  It was kept very quiet, and not discussed publicly that I can remember.  A number of bad reports were often in the press then regarding GCx’s abuse of authority and in that DC area.  I don’t know if “Jean’s Story” was a catalyst for that (Newspaper Article found under “External Links”).  Now that you bring it up I vaguely remember being told not to talk about the presence of protesters (because I was there) at that conference - to keep that secret.

This may have been the case in question.

I believe this is what they were talking about...thank you.

Are there any links or documents about how that came about or what actually happened?

I was also at the "DC 86" conference.  We were told to not talk to the protesters. We were specifically told that we should not take any of their flyers or talk with them.  I regret that I did not think for myself and take a flyer, or talk to someone.  I do remember that it was kind of a big deal and it was very clearly communicated that we should not have anything to do with them.
How soon after " DC 86" did Jim McCotter resign???
He lead the conference, preached that the church is the only way we can reach the world, we needed to unite as believers to the Great Commission and to the movement of GCM, to reach the world, ever man should be a pastor, GCM was the only church that was being obedient to the Bible etc, etc.
Then Jim "resigns."  He disappears.
I just re-read the KANE report.  Jim McCotter is a evil, unethical, deceptive man that GCM as a movement has not renounced or excommunicated. This is the danger in sweeping sin under the rug.   The same is true of Mark Darling now.  Evergreen is moving on and moving forward.  They have not dealt with the sin of what Mark Darling did.  He "resigned" and the sin has not been dealt with.
This forum and social media are now ways that the sins of the leaders can not just be swept under the rug.  Current Evergreen, Walnut creek, Summit View and other GCM abusive churches can not just sweep it all under the rug.  The deception is being exposed, and people are being slowly restored and healed.

To any ex-members who were protesting at the DC 86 conference. Thank you for standing up for truth and trying to help us.
I regret not listening.  I would love to see the flyers you were trying to give me then if anyone still has one.

I attended the DC '86 conference as well.  It was my very first event with GCx.  I remember it was held at Bowie State University in Maryland.  I think I recall seeing protesters but I don't remember much about that.  I heard Jim Mccotter speak and after that, he was gone.
