Checking Out Churches

By the way, this is the PERFECT Season to check out other churches because you can examine online what they are teaching without even stepping foot inside.

Do they require excessive commitment to their group?
Are they implying theirs is the only their application for certain scriptures?
Do they seek to use or exploit their people for their own ambition?

You might also be able gauge the tone in which they address their audience.

Is it arrogant?
Is it bullying?
Is it condemning?
Do they boast?
Do they imply they are superior to other Christian leaders or churches?
Do they exult themselves over their people (listeners)?

What is the relationship they seek to claim with their people?

Do they claim to be a Father or one with authority over the personal lives of people?
(Jesus warns there is only ONE Father)

Do they claim the responsibility over their flock as that of a Husband?
(The Apostle Paul warns we have only one spiritual Husband, Jesus)

A second podcast is up.

Wonder if the Chesterton people know of the threats and vulgarities Jeromy Darling directed on this forum towards the victims and those supporting their right to be heard? Confessing to his confessor doesn’t make those things right. He’s got some major public apologizing to do.

I hadn't Googled the words "Jeromy Darling Catholic" till just now. Here's what I found.

"An enthusiastic Evangelical Protestant got in touch with me over a year ago with a thousand questions. I usually don’t have time for this kind of discussion, but there was something different about this guy. He was a music leader, actor, speaker and involved in a Protestant church that collapsed due to in-fighting and bitterness."

Apparently the way he characterized the ECC situation is that his church collapsed due to "in-fighting and bitterness"! Whoa!

For anyone reading this who is not aware of the situation, Jeromy's father engaged in inappropriate conduct with multiple women at the church he founded. Rather than submitting to church discipline and restoration, Jeromy's father (and his entire family) left the church.

From the investigator’s report: “the investigation does support the fact that Mark Darling, while holding a position of authority, engaged in inappropriate conduct. . . .”  Specifically, this conduct included spending time alone with women in private settings and inappropriate conversations with women of a sexual nature.

Truth matters.

Thank you for posting that clarification, Linda.  I so agree that the whole truth is crucial and it does very much matter, especially to the victims.

Thought it has to be extremely hard for the children of the accused perpetrator, it’s not just about their world collapsing, it’s about years of preying upon multiple young women made vulnerable through authoritarian and unaccountable leadership.  It’s about a grave violation of trust.

More than one victim notified their GCx church elders decades earlier.  There was no real result or repentance. There was no revoking of his leadership position then.  It would have been the final responsibility of the leaders administrating this organization to ensure the safety and security of their people.  They abdicated. Reprehensibly, the leaders who were made aware of the abuse were contracted to keep silent about it.  Some with a sum of money attached.

Those closest to this unfit pastor very likely have not been given the true story by him.  He is not doing them any favors, only prolonging their pain and confusion, resulting in misplaced bitterness.
