The sum of your word is truth, and every one of your righteous rules endures forever.  Psalm 119:160

I keep thinking about this. It is the sum, the total, of God’s Word that brings truth and, with it, freedom. Overlooking an offense AND speaking the truth in love. Perfect justice demanded AND mercy poured out at the cross♥️

Happy Easter, everyone, and thanks for all you’ve shared here! Your stories matter.

Beautiful Anglican chanting here along with lots of stained glass imagery and churches.

“Imagine yourself as a living house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation is that He is building quite a different house from the one you thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself.”

― C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

“I believe in Christianity as I believe that the sun has risen: not only because I see it, but because by it I see everything else.”
― C.S. Lewis

“If you look for truth, you may find comfort in the end; if you look for comfort you will not get either comfort or truth only soft soap and wishful thinking to begin, and in the end, despair.”
― C.S. Lewis

Here is Holy Trinity, C.S. Lewis' church.

Hebrews 1 New International Version (NIV)
God’s Final Word: His Son
1 In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. 3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. 4 So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.

The Son Superior to Angels
5 For to which of the angels did God ever say,

“You are my Son;
    today I have become your Father”?

Or again,

“I will be his Father,
    and he will be my Son”?

6 And again, when God brings his firstborn into the world, he says,

“Let all God’s angels worship him.”

7 In speaking of the angels he says,

“He makes his angels spirits,
    and his servants flames of fire.”

8 But about the Son he says,

“Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever;
    a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom.
9 You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
    therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions
    by anointing you with the oil of joy.”

10 He also says,

“In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth,
    and the heavens are the work of your hands.
11 They will perish, but you remain;
    they will all wear out like a garment.
12 You will roll them up like a robe;
    like a garment they will be changed.
But you remain the same,
    and your years will never end.”

13 To which of the angels did God ever say,

“Sit at my right hand
    until I make your enemies
    a footstool for your feet”?

14 Are not all angels ministering spirits sent to serve those who will inherit salvation?

I'm glad you enjoyed it.  Smiley

Today I'm heading a different direction.

“Grace is everywhere, like lenses that go unnoticed because you are looking through them.”
― Philip Yancey, What's So Amazing About Grace?

“Thunderously, inarguably, the Sermon on the Mount proves that before God we all stand on level ground: murderers and temper-throwers, adulterers and lusters, thieves and coveters. We are all desperate, and that is in fact the only state appropriate to a human being who wants to know God. Having fallen from the absolute Ideal, we have nowhere to land but in the safety net of absolute grace.”
― Philip Yancey, The Jesus I Never Knew

“Grace, like water, flows to the lowest part.”
― Philip Yancey

“Yet as I read the birth stories about Jesus I cannot help but conclude that though the world may be tilted toward the rich and powerful, God is tilted toward the underdog.”
― Philip Yancey

Psalm 16

1 Keep me safe, my God,
    for in you I take refuge.

2 I say to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
    apart from you I have no good thing.”
3 I say of the holy people who are in the land,
    “They are the noble ones in whom is all my delight.”
4 Those who run after other gods will suffer more and more.
    I will not pour out libations of blood to such gods
    or take up their names on my lips.

5 Lord, you alone are my portion and my cup;
    you make my lot secure.
6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places;
    surely I have a delightful inheritance.
7 I will praise the Lord, who counsels me;
    even at night my heart instructs me.
8 I keep my eyes always on the Lord.
    With him at my right hand, I will not be shaken.

9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
    my body also will rest secure,
10 because you will not abandon me to the realm of the dead,
    nor will you let your faithful one see decay.
11 You make known to me the path of life;
    you will fill me with joy in your presence,
    with eternal pleasures at your right hand.

On that subject of grace, Agatha,

"By the grace of God--
I am what I am."
                             The Apostle Paul

"Amazing Grace,
           How Sweet the Sound..."   John Newton

At the age of 82, Newton said, "My memory is nearly gone,
but I remember two things:
that I am a great sinner--
and that Christ is a great Savior!"

John Newton's Tombstone:

"John Newton, once an infidel and libertine,
a servant of slaves in Africa, was,
by the rich mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ,
preserved, restored, pardoned,
and appointed to preach the faith
he had long labored to destroy."

Okay guys, this is a fun "what if" post.  So.

The site generally thought to be the first church in England is Glastonbury.  And in British lore, there is this really cool legend passed down that Joseph of Arimithea founded that church.  If you remember, he took the responsibility to bury Jesus after crucifixion, I believe even burying Him in his own tomb.  He is now venerated as a saint in Catholocism, Orthodoxy, and those Protestant denominations that recognize saints.

The lore and legends even went so far back that Jesus is said to have walked on England with Joseph.  And that gorgeous song "Jerusalem," based on William Blake's poem, is a metaphorical picture of a Christian England.  Joseph is also connected with the grail in legend.  Obviously this is all legend unrelated to historical truth.  But I love the metaphor of it, and also, God is omnipresent so it works for me on that level too-- the idea that we want to make God's kingdom here on earth, where we live. And of course for them, that was England.

So.  This is the cool part.

Those legends are not confirmed. That's not the cool part.  But they recently discovered that the site under Glastonbury is much older than once thought!

I just read this really neat article today about it.

Here's the song "Jerusalem" sung at the royal wedding at Westminster.

Psalm 19
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
    the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
    night after night they reveal knowledge.
3 They have no speech, they use no words;
    no sound is heard from them.
4 Yet their voice goes out into all the earth,
    their words to the ends of the world.
In the heavens God has pitched a tent for the sun.
5     It is like a bridegroom coming out of his chamber,
    like a champion rejoicing to run his course.
6 It rises at one end of the heavens
    and makes its circuit to the other;
    nothing is deprived of its warmth.

7 The law of the Lord is perfect,
    refreshing the soul.
The statutes of the Lord are trustworthy,
    making wise the simple.
8 The precepts of the Lord are right,
    giving joy to the heart.
The commands of the Lord are radiant,
    giving light to the eyes.
9 The fear of the Lord is pure,
    enduring forever.
The decrees of the Lord are firm,
    and all of them are righteous.

10 They are more precious than gold,
    than much pure gold;
they are sweeter than honey,
    than honey from the honeycomb.
11 By them your servant is warned;
    in keeping them there is great reward.
12 But who can discern their own errors?
    Forgive my hidden faults.
13 Keep your servant also from willful sins;
    may they not rule over me.
Then I will be blameless,
    innocent of great transgression.

14 May these words of my mouth and this meditation of my heart
    be pleasing in your sight,
    Lord, my Rock and my Redeemer.

Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace:
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy.

O divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek
to be consoled as to console,
to be understood as to understand,
to be loved as to love.
For it is in giving that we receive,
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.
Amen.

Nicene Creed

I believe in one God, Father Almighty, Creator of
heaven and earth, and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of
God, begotten of the Father before all ages;

Light of Light, true God of true God, begotten,
not created, of one essence with the Father
through Whom all things were made.

Who for us men and for our salvation
came down from heaven and was incarnate
of the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary and became man.

He was crucified for us under Pontius Pilate,
and suffered and was buried;

And He rose on the third day,
according to the Scriptures.

He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father;

And He will come again with glory to judge the living
and dead. His kingdom shall have no end.

And in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the Creator of life,
Who proceeds from the Father, Who together with the
Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, Who
spoke through the prophets.

In one, holy, catholic, and apostolic Church.

I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.

I look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the age to come.

Amen.

Psalm 24
Of David. A psalm.
1 The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;
2 for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

3 Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?
4 The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not trust in an idol
    or swear by a false god.

5 They will receive blessing from the Lord
    and vindication from God their Savior.
6 Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face, God of Jacob.

7 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
8 Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.
9 Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.
10 Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty—
    he is the King of glory.

Agatha, I ordered the movie The North Avenue Irregulars from the library. Never heard of it.  A good movie for Lent?  Grin

I do recommend the movie in the theaters now about The Apostle Paul. It is dedicated to the persecuted church.  Excellent, I thought.

And now for my Lenten entry, remembering that Jesus is the ultimate definition of Love.

I Corinthians 13

If I speak the languages of men and of angels,
but do not have love,
I am a sounding gong or a clanging cymbal.
If I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge,
and if I have all faith,
so I can move mountains,
but do not have love, I am nothing.
And if I donate all my goods to feed the poor, and if I give my body to be burned,
but do not have love,
I gain nothing.
Love is patient; love is kind.
Love does not envy;
is not boastful;
is not conceited;
does not act improperly;
is not selfish;
is not provoked;
does not keep record of wrongs;
finds no joy in unrighteousness,
but rejoices in the truth;
bears all things, believes all things,
hopes all things, endures all things.
Love never ends.
...Now these three remain:
faith, hope, and love,
But the greatest of these is love.

Psalm 27
Of David.
1 The Lord is my light and my salvation—
    whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life—
    of whom shall I be afraid?

2 When the wicked advance against me
    to devour me,
it is my enemies and my foes
    who will stumble and fall.
3 Though an army besiege me,
    my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me,
    even then I will be confident.

4 One thing I ask from the Lord,
    this only do I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord
    all the days of my life,
to gaze on the beauty of the Lord
    and to seek him in his temple.
5 For in the day of trouble
    he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his sacred tent
    and set me high upon a rock.

6 Then my head will be exalted
    above the enemies who surround me;
at his sacred tent I will sacrifice with shouts of joy;
    I will sing and make music to the Lord.

7 Hear my voice when I call, Lord;
    be merciful to me and answer me.
8 My heart says of you, “Seek his face!”
    Your face, Lord, I will seek.
9 Do not hide your face from me,
    do not turn your servant away in anger;
    you have been my helper.
Do not reject me or forsake me,
    God my Savior.
10 Though my father and mother forsake me,
    the Lord will receive me.
11 Teach me your way, Lord;
    lead me in a straight path
    because of my oppressors.
12 Do not turn me over to the desire of my foes,
    for false witnesses rise up against me,
    spouting malicious accusations.

13 I remain confident of this:
    I will see the goodness of the Lord
    in the land of the living.
14 Wait for the Lord;
    be strong and take heart
    and wait for the Lord.

My Tribute by Andrae Crouch

How can I say thanks
for all the things that you have done for me?
Things so undeserved
yet you gave to prove your love for me?
The voices of a million angels
could not express my gratitude.
All that I am and ever hope to be,
I owe it all to Thee.

To God Be the Glory! To God Be the Glory!
To God Be the Glory for the things He has done!
With His blood He has saved me,
With His power He has raised me,
To God Be the Glory for the things He has done!

Just let me live my life--
let it be pleasing Lord to Thee--
And if I gain any praise,
let it go to Calvary.
With His blood He has saved me,
With His power He has raised me,
To God Be the Glory for the things He has done!
