Address the question. Goodness: you are as bad as most politicians with this deflection strategy!

Nothing. I looked. I call ad hominem. Why would you ask that? Plus, even if she did that wouldn’t mean she had not been sexually abused. You still did not answer the question about why he was placed on leave? Do you remember why? I honestly want to know.

Digital Lynch Mob, if I understand you correctly, you believe that before we examine MD's reasons for stepping down, we should examine Suzanne's criminal history.  Do I have this correct?

By the way, implying that Suzanne has a criminal record that you provide no evidence for does happen to fall under the definition of gossip.

Just saying that since you all fancy yourselves as investigators, you may want to consider looking into both parties. It is very relevant.

Maybe having a pastor step down for a while is how EC works their accountability structure, if a pastor needs to work on something. Perhaps we just need to accept that this is their MO and not question it.  Instead of thinking there might be something corrupt about it.

God is Faithful, okay, but do you really believe that?  I mean, yeah, sure, sometimes secrecy is good for certain things.  But for a head pastor?  Gosh, I don't know, I feel like that needs to be open.  Even if it feels awkward or even humiliating.  (Obviously there would be exceptions to times when transparency is needed!  Don't want to make it seem like I believe in 100% transparency all of the time.)

But yeah, I do think sometimes accepting without questioning is a valid approach.

DLM,

I chose this thread because I didn't want to put it on the MD abuse thread because I didn't want to imply it was related to abuse. We were all left to conjecture because no one would tell us. We asked a pastor and a pastor's wife. The pastor knew and wouldn't tell. The wife did not know and said her husband would not tell her.

I repeat. Do you know why MD was placed on a leave of absence in the mid-90's? I would guess Spring of '96 or '97. It was for a few months. You were there then. Did you ever know why or wonder why? Don't you think it is odd for a pastor to be placed on a leave of absence and for the congregation to not know why?

I guess, the question for me is, "How do we know when to accept without questioning or when to pursue further investigation in light of new information?"

I completely agree. I had multiple friends who were hauled to the front of the stage and forced to confess their sexual "sins" to the entire church. I don't see why it should be any different for pastors.

It could be this wasn't a sin issue. Could be a health issue. But that should be easy enough to clear up without harming privacy, wouldn't it?

I know, right?  We did too!  Well, actually at our church it was a couple who had to go to each small group and confess their out of wedlock pregnancy.  That pregnancy is now an intelligent, amazing young woman.  And her parents are stellar people.  But I saw this too in our GC church. They've all since left the movement as well.

Of course there is also that excommunication is Wisconsin for something like gossip/slander/faction in 2011.

Excommunication, mind you. Seems pretty harsh.

Are GC churches harder on their grass roots members than their pastors? Because stepping down from ministry for a few months with no one except a few trusted other leaders knowing why...  It kind of has that appearance of a different, softer standard for leadership, at least leadership at the very top.

Is there a different standard for pastors? I wonder if anyone knows.
